Sweet Melbourne

Thurs 17/10/13

Melbourne is renowned for its coffee & food. In terms of sweet treats, there are numerous cafes, bakeries, patisseries & chocolate shops to satisfy even the sweetest tooth. Available within the city are chocolate tours where a guide takes you to select chocolate shops & patisseries. It is a walking tour which has a double bonus in familiarising you with the city & sharing some of its history & which also includes some product sampling at the various stops. Around the city you can find Haighs chocolates, Chokolait, Koko Black, Cacao, Ganache Chocolate, The Chocolate Box, Laurent Boulangerie & The Royal Inn, to name a few. Here's a few images to get the taste buds racing.

Ganache Chocolate in Collins St sells individual chocolates, packaged chocolates, novelty moulded chocolates such as rabbits & dinosaurs & individual & large gateaux.

The Royal Inn, located in the Royal Arcade, is all about macarons.

Cacao, located in the old GPO building at the corner of Elizabeth & Bourke Sts offers a selection of individual & boxed chocolates & macarons.

A tram journey of approximately 15min will take you to South Yarra, where you'll find another cluster of notable establishments which are all in close proximity to each other. Here, you'll find Ganache Chocolate, Burch & Purchese, Lux Bite & the newly opened Zumbo's, Adriano Zumbo's first Melbourne store.
Burch & Purchese offers a selection of verrines, entremets, ice creams, confectionery & chocolate. When I was last there, the window was themed along the lines of Alice in Wonderland, all done in chocolate. The chocolate here offers something alternate to your standard individual chocolates sold elsewhere. Here, you can pick up a quirky Mr Potato Head, Pablo Penguin or rabbit which are all constructed using Easter egg & half sphere moulds.

Lux Bite in Toorak Rd also offers a range of impressive looking desserts, gateaux & macarons.

Zumbo's offers a similar range to his Sydney stores, macarons, pastries & gateaux in large & small sizes.

I got my first opportunity to try a cronut, croissant pastry cut into donut form & fried. As with the croissant you see all the layers of fried dough. Zumbo calls his version a "zonut". You'd want to get a clean bill of health from your doctor before you tackled one of these babies. Maybe they should come with a health warning!
Chez Dre, near South Melbourne markets, was recommended by Paul Kennedy, Savour's teacher, for it's quality products. They have a range of beautiful petit gateaux, macarons & pastries & also do breakfasts & lunches.
